Lincoln
Digital Restoration

This stereoview
is a restored image showing Lincoln in January 1864 taken by Matthew
Brady.

The Library
of Congress image on the left is dark and scratched. Restored, (on right)
the image clarity brings out fine details. This photo was taken by Alexander
Gardner five days before the Gettysburg Address.
This February
5, 1865 photo by Alexander Gardner is speckled on the Library of Congress.
To the right the image is cleaned bringing out detail.

A crack
in the glass plate is digitally removed and images flaws are removed
in the restoration of this Library of Congress Alexander Gardner image
taken February 5, 1865.

The
above image on the left is from the Library of Congress collection
(3d02064u). Unrestored it is difficult to realize that the image is
displayed reversed. Restored and tinted the image becomes a clear
Lincoln portrait. While the quality is not the best even after restoration
it's importance is unique in that it appears to have never been catalogued
by Meserve nor Ostendorf. It's categorized as E-126 from the book
"Color of Lincoln".
The
Library of Congress notes place the photograph circa 1864 by an unknown
photographer. The image comes from a copy of a daguerreotype of a
albumen photograph in a plain leather case. The image comes from the
Anson Gonger Goodyear collection of Lincoln Images at the Library
of Congress which was received as a gift in 1964.
